Today marks the 50th anniversary of the three-point seatbelt. It was patented by Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin in 1959, but the Swedes magnanimously opened up the tech to other car makers as they saw the real-world safety benefit of seatbelts in all cars. The design was so effective that in Germany the patent registrars listed it in the top eight inventions which have made an impact from 1885 to 1985.
For those of you who thought the tiny Aston Martin Cygnet--a reworked Toyota iQ city car--was blasphemous for the company, Sir Stirling Moss disagrees. He surprised his wife with one at the Royal Automobile Club in London on Monday. The Mosses had planned a private dinner on the eve of Lady Moss's birthday at the century-old club.
The vehicle in these photos might resemble an Alfa Romeo Giulietta from some angles, but the raised ride height, chunky all-terrain tires and slotted grille hiding behind the camouflage suggest a prototype of the 2014 Jeep Liberty. Code-named UJ, the new Jeep Liberty will be built at Chrysler's Toledo, Ohio, assembly plant. A new 3.2-liter V6 will power the Liberty, which will come with a nine-speed automatic transmission.
